Xiaomi’s brand new Black Shark 2 has received a launch date, that being the 18th of March this year, and it’s going to have a hefty 12GB of RAM in tow. It’s hard to believe that it wasn’t too long ago when we were saying 4GB of RAM was way more than a smartphone needed, yet now we’re already waiting for a phone with more RAM than most of today’s laptops.
Of course, Xiaomi isn’t the first one to pull off something like this. Just last December, Lenovo unveiled their very own Z5 Pro GT with the same amount of RAM in its highest specced option. On top of that, Samsung have also announced a Galaxy S10+ model that offers 12 GB RAM, and even Vivo’s new IQOO sub-brand launched its first ever smartphone in that same vein.
The Black Shark 2 might be late but it’s also the only one of these that may even have an excuse to have that much memory. It is, after all, the successor to one of the first few gaming phones in the market. On the other hand, we’re kind of worried that might be one of its only selling points. With the current smartphone market already saturated with smartphones with 12GB of RAM, Xiaomi’s going to need something more than just RAM to help the Black Shark 2 stand out from the pack.
Other specs that have been floating around suggest that the new phone will come with 128 GB storage, an advanced thermal management system in Liquid Cool 3.0 , the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and a 2340×1080 display of unknown size. Quite the well rounded set of specs, and we’re also expecting to see the next version of the Black Shark handheld controller when it launches. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait until the 18th of March to find out more.
